Join Our Alcohol Treatment Program if You Are Abusing Alcohol

The Lakeview Health Alcohol Rehabilitation Program treats alcoholism. Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, has been identified by the American Medical Association as a disease with a definite set of signs and symptoms. This disease includes an intense craving for alcohol and one’s continued drinking despite negative consequences. The consequences of abusing alcohol are often serious. They may be legal in nature, involve the loss of employment, or be responsible for you having health related problems or problems within the family.
There are four components to alcoholism: the craving (the compulsion and need to drink), physical dependence (withdrawal symptoms will occur if the use of alcohol is discontinued), impaired control (the inability for someone to limit their drinking at any given time) and tolerance (requiring increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel the same effects).

Why is Alcoholism Called a Disease?

It has taken considerable time and research, but alcoholism is now accepted as a disease. Like many other diseases, it has symptoms that include the need for alcohol despite negative consequences (poor health, job loss, divorce, etc). Alcoholism is a chronic and progressive illness and like other diseases, has a predictable course and is influenced genetically and environmentally. Furthermore, it is characterized by a preoccupation with the drug, distortions in one's thinking and denial. Alcohol abusers can join our alcohol treatment program and fight this disease at our accredited alcohol rehabilitation program facility.

Factors that can lead to alcoholism or alcohol abuse and require an alcohol treatment program:

  • Genetics: Certain genetic factors may cause a person to be vulnerable to alcoholism, alcohol abuse or drug addiction.
  • Emotional state:  Extreme stress, depression, anxiety, or emotional pain can lead some people to alcohol abuse or alcoholism to block out the turmoil.
  • Psychological factors: Having low-self esteem or dual diagnosis may make you more susceptible to alcohol abuse or alcoholism. Having friends who drink alcohol on a regular basis can bring you a step closer into alcohol abuse or alcoholism.
  • Social and cultural factors: Advertising portrays alcohol in a glamorous fashion. The better it looks, the more likely someone is to drink more alcohol, possibly resulting in alcohol abuse or alcoholism.

Alcohol Treatment Programs, Alcohol Rehabilitation and Intervention

Most people suffering from alcoholism, alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency enters an alcohol rehabilitation program or alcohol detox program reluctantly. This is due primarily to the denial that accompanies this illness. For the alcoholic resistant to entering an alcohol rehabilitation program or alcohol detox program, intervention may be the key to breaking through their denial. A professional interventionist may help the alcoholic recognize and accept the need for alcohol rehabilitation or alcohol detox. If you have questions concerning how to best design an intervention call us at 1-866-657-4357 and one of our alcohol rehabilitation program professionals will assist you.

Determining Your Need to Enter an Alcohol Rehabilitation Program

The first step in Lakeview’s alcohol rehabilitation program or alcohol treatment program is to determine whether a person is abusing alcohol or is alcohol dependant. If you are dependent on alcohol, trying to control your drinking will only prolong your pain and suffering. Complete abstinence is the only solution and most people achieve that goal through the combination of an alcohol detox program, alcohol rehabilitation program, a relapse prevention plan and attendance of self help groups.

Many people found to be suffering from alcohol abuse may also benefit from our alcohol rehabilitation program. Research has shown many people in the grips of alcohol abuse suffer the same consequences as the person that is alcohol dependant. Take the time and let us help you determine which level of alcohol rehab can best meet your needs. When it comes to choosing an alcohol treatment program, as there are as many different alcohol treatment program philosophies as there are alcohol treatment programs. The key lies in matching the needs of the person looking for an alcohol rehabilitation program with the actual alcohol rehabilitation services offered in the alcohol rehab.

Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs and Alcohol Rehab

Most alcohol treatment programs or alcohol rehabilitation programs include group psychotherapy, individual therapy, family counseling, educational lectures, nutritional counseling, medication management and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Here is what you might expect from Lakeview’s residential alcohol rehabilitation program:

  • Alcohol Detox: An alcohol treatment program or alcohol rehabilitation program usually begins with alcohol detox or alcohol detoxification. This usually takes between four to seven days, depending upon a variety of factors (amount of alcohol, frequency, any other drugs involved, medical problems etc.). Medications are provided to reduce or sometimes eliminate the symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal. The alcohol detox program is located within the alcohol rehabilitation program facility to provide for a smooth transition into alcohol rehab.
  •  Alcohol Rehabilitation and Medical Stabilization: In many cases, people have developed medical problems as a result of their alcoholism. (Some of these problems are listed below.) With this in mind, patients are provided with a comprehensive physical examination. Most medical problems can be treated within the alcohol rehabilitation program facility. For the medical problems that cannot be managed within the alcohol rehab, referral is made to an appropriate healthcare professional.
  • Psychiatric Assessment and Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Many people who access an alcohol treatment program or alcohol rehabilitation program seem to have an accompanying psychiatric disorder.  For this reason, every person is provided with a thorough psychiatric evaluation. Those who are found to have a psychiatric diagnosis in conjunction with their alcoholism have a dual diagnosis.  Both of these issues will be treated while in the alcohol rehabilitation program, in Lakeview’s dual diagnosis treatment component.
  • Acceptance and Abstinence: For an alcoholism treatment program to be effective, a person must accept the fact that they can not control their drinking and the only solution lies in complete abstinence. The issue that stands in the way of this process is referred to as denial. The staff at Lakeview are trained in assisting patient’s “break through” their denial.
  • Relapse Prevention: As with most diseases, relapse does occur. Unfortunately, in the area of alcoholism treatment or alcohol rehabilitation, relapse occurs in far too many cases. The primary reason for relapse is usually found in a person’s resistance or reluctance to follow one or more of the components of their relapse prevention plan. A relapse prevention plan is a crucial part of a person’s alcohol rehabilitation program. Without it, alcohol treatment is not complete. Relapse does not have to be a part of one’s recovery, but if it does occur, immediately contact us.
  • Family Alcohol Rehabilitation Program: It has long been recognized that alcoholism is a family illness and has profound effects upon the family unit. The Family Recovery Component is the centerpiece of our alcohol treatment program. This four day family treatment experience is a powerful alcohol rehabilitation program factor.
  • Specialty Groups: While everyone comes to an alcohol treatment program for treatment of alcoholism, the “true” healing comes from addressing your core issues in our alcohol rehabilitation program. Whether you need help for sexual trauma, an eating disorder or confusion with sexual orientation, Lakeview has specialty groups designed to meet your needs.
  • Recreational Therapy: Very few alcohol rehabilitation programs provide recreational therapy, although it has long been considered an excellent treatment resource to utilize as part of the alcohol rehabilitation program process. Lakeview is one of the few alcohol rehabs with its own recreation therapists.
  • Art Therapy: Lakeview is one of the few alcohol rehabilitation program facilities in the country to provide art therapy for its patients. Art therapy is a very innovative clinical tool that when used in the proper manner, can produce dramatic results.

Complications of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol is considered a depressant, even though it may feel like a stimulant at times.  Alcohol lowers inhibitions and affects the thought process, emotions and judgment. Alcohol abuse can impair muscle coordination and depress the vital centers of your brain. Binge drinking has even been found to result in a life-threatening coma.

Join an alcohol rehabilitation program and avoid experiencing alcohol related health problems which may include:

  • Liver Disorders:  Alcohol abuse or alcoholism can cause alcoholic hepatitis - an inflammation of the liver. Signs and symptoms of alcohol related hepatitis may include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and tenderness, fever, yellowing of the skin (jaundice) and sometimes confusion. After years of alcohol abuse or alcoholism, hepatitis may lead to cirrhosis of the liver, the irreversible and progressive deterioration and scarring of liver.
  • Gastrointestinal Problems: Alcohol abuse can result in inflammation of the lining of the stomach (gastritis) and interfere with absorption certain nutrients. Alcohol abuse or alcoholism can also damage the pancreas, which produces the hormones that regulate your metabolism.
  • Cardiovascular Problems: Alcohol abuse or alcoholism can lead to high blood pressure and damage your heart muscle (cardiomyopathy). These conditions can increase your risk of heart failure or stroke.
  • Diabetes Complications: Alcohol abuse restricts the release of glucose from your liver and can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This presents a serious situation if you have diabetes and are already taking insulin to lower your blood sugar level.
  • Sexual Function and Menstruation: Alcohol abuse or alcoholism can cause erectile dysfunction in men. In women, it can interrupt menstruation.
  • Birth Defects: Alcohol use, alcohol abuse or alcoholism during pregnancy may cause fetal alcohol syndrome. This condition can result in birth defects, as well as, developmental disabilities.
  • Neurological Complications: Alcohol abuse or alcoholism can affect your nervous system and create difficulty with thought process, as well as, damage to the brain and dementia.
  • Increased Risk of Cancer: Chronic alcohol abuse or alcoholism has been linked to cancer of the, larynx, liver and colon.
