Cocaine is a stimulant, a substance that increases the rate of the body’s functions. Crack refers to the more concentrated (freebase) form of cocaine that is generally found in crystals, or “rocks,” and smoked. Crack has a higher potential for addiction than other forms of cocaine; however, all forms are highly addictive and extremely dangerous. Individuals use the substance because it provides a carefree, euphoric, and relaxed feeling, but it also has harmful negative effects in both the short and long term. Popular slang terms for cocaine are coke, crack, blow, big C, California cornflakes, snow, and yay.
Cocaine use can cause increased heart and respiratory rates, elevated blood pressure, dilated pupils, perspiration, dizziness, blurred vision, talkativeness, restlessness or periods of excessive activity, increased alertness, anxiety, increased body temperature, hallucinations, convulsions, severe mood swings, and decreased appetite.
Paraphernalia associated with the substance includes pipes, metal spoons, razor blades, mirrors, and syringes.
Long-term health risks of cocaine abuse include heart attack, heart disease, excessive weight loss, erosion of the nasal septum, respiratory failure, contraction of HIV/AIDS if the substance is injected, stroke, seizure, and possible death.
Cocaine addiction can also lead to inability to fulfill financial obligations, loss of employment, destruction of personal relationships, and divorce.
