Is an Alcohol Detox Program Different From a Drug Detox Program?
When a person refers to an alcohol detox program or drug detox program, they are actually referring to the substance the person is going to detox from. While addiction treatment programs or drug rehab programs might differ on the actual detox protocol they utilize, inpatient drug detox and inpatient alcohol detox services are generally the same.
To maintain the highest quality of care, the detox program should be located within the drug rehab or alcohol rehab facility to insure the smoothest transition into the actual drug rehab or alcohol treatment process. The detox program should have as a minimum, 24 hour nursing, a physician trained in addiction medicine (ASAM certified) and an addiction treatment staff capable of providing ongoing support for the patient in detox. The detox program and drug rehab should be licensed by the state in which they reside, as well as, accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
Lastly, a person’s length of stay in alcohol detox or drug detox is determined by how long it takes the individual to become medically stable and free of drug withdrawal or alcohol withdrawal symptoms. This varies depending upon the substance, length of use, frequency of use, method of use, combination of other substances and associated medical and psychiatric issues.
Is Drug Detox or Alcohol Detox a Painful Experience?
The answer to this question greatly depends upon the drug rehab and detox program you choose. The physicians at Lakeview’s detox program go to great lengths to insure each patient feels as comfortable as possible during the detox process. We DO NOT believe you have to suffer in detox to recover. Medications are dispensed on a regular basis to manage any alcohol withdrawal or drug withdrawal symptoms and each patient receives plenty of rest, great food and professional attention. The goal for the Lakeview staff is to provide each patient in detox with as effective a detox protocol as possible in an effort to minimize any withdrawal symptoms a person may experience.
Is There a Difference Between a Detox Program, Drug Rehab Program and Alcohol Treatment Program?
Yes, there is a tremendous difference between a detox program and drug rehab program or “detox and rehab”, as people like to refer to them. First, a detox program is usually located within the drug or alcohol rehab itself and is considered an addiction treatment service of the drug rehab program. The detox program has as its goal the cessation of all drug use or alcohol use and the management of the presenting drug withdrawal symptoms or alcohol withdrawal symptoms. While there is clinical support, the main focus is on medical stabilization and the support of any mental health disorders.
The drug rehab portion of the program, short for drug rehabilitation, lends itself to focus more on what a person needs to do to maintain their abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The drug rehab services or addiction treatment services are clinical in nature and will include, but not be limited to; dual diagnosis treatment, individual and group therapy, educational classes, family therapy component, relapse prevention, addiction triggers, aftercare planning and psychiatric support.
