Ecstasy Addiction

Ecstasy is a hallucinogen, a substance that causes an individual to see, smell, hear, or otherwise sense something that is not present, as well as a stimulant, causing increased rate of bodily functions. It is prevalent in nightclubs, raves, and other all-night parties. Ecstasy is commonly taken in pill form, but it can also be injected. Individuals use ecstasy to gain a sense of total well-being, enhanced pleasure from sensory experiences, euphoric feelings, and sociability. Slang names for the drug include E, X, beans, rolls, MDMA, 007s, disco biscuits, Eve, hug drug, and rave energy.

Ecstasy pills are typically colored or imprinted with a design exclusive to their maker.

Effects and Signs of Ecstasy Addiction

Ecstasy use can cause hallucinations, dizziness, emotional warmth, confusion, disorientation, nausea, anxiety, extreme behavioral and mood changes, trance-like state, sweating, extreme thirst, trembling hands, clenched teeth, changes in sensory perceptions, violent behavior, and changes in perception of time. The drug also causes an increase in body temperature, which, especially when compounded with dancing or a crowded club, can cause heatstroke. A single use may also cause irreversible brain damage.

In addition to immediate effects, unpleasant “flashbacks,” where an individual experiences effects of the drug without using it, may occur long after ecstasy is used.

Long-term health effects of ecstasy use include depression, impaired memory, circulatory problems, heart, kidney, lung, and liver failure, dental damage, psychosis, and possible death.

Ecstasy addiction can cause an individual to neglect relationships, become financially irresponsible, lose employment, have difficulty learning, or fail to complete assignments/tasks.
