Our Free, Four-Day Family Addiction Therapy Workshops
Alcohol and substance abuse are a family disease. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that the addiction of one member of the family has a profound impact upon every other member. So profound is this dynamic that not only does the person suffering from drug and alcohol abuse become dysfunctional, but the family dealing with the addiction suffers as well. There are both generalized and specific breakdowns in the family system because of the substance abuse. The concept of drug and alcohol addiction as a family disease is therefore tied to this dynamic between the members of the family and the addict.
Lakeview Health Systems is keenly aware of the importance of treating the whole person suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. To do that, it is imperative that the family participate, whenever possible, in the addict’s treatment. To that end we have developed a free, four-day, all-inclusive program (transportation and accommodations are not included). Issues associated with addiction and the family dealing with addiction are addressed specifically to begin immediate healing within the family unit.
As with our detoxification treatment plans and our drug and alcohol treatment programs, our family disease therapy program is based entirely upon the best evidenced-based practices available. To meet that challenge, we have licensed family and mental health doctors leading our family workshops. To further ensure success, we offer an integrated family therapy and substance abuse treatment program. The family addiction therapy component of the substance abuse treatment program has two main purposes:
- to use the family’s strengths and resources to find or develop ways to live without the substance of abuse
- to ameliorate the impact of chemical dependency on both the identified patient and the family (DHHS, TIP 39, (SMA) 05-4006, 2005, p. 20)
The Family Disease and the Goal of Family Treatment
Our four-day family addiction therapy workshops are offered every two weeks at Lakeview Health Systems in Jacksonville, FL. Every participating family member is given learning experiences with and without the addicted family member. Every one in the family unit is important to secure recovery for all in the family unit. Addiction family therapy allows loved ones the opportunity to get answers to questions never asked, the opportunity to learn about the disease of addiction, the opportunity to understand how the family unit has participated in the process of abuse, and the opportunity to address issues relating to family functioning such as: co-dependency, other addictions, psychosocial education, intra family relationships, and so much more. Our family interventions are conducted to help stabilize the threatened family unit. Long-term change can only occur if the entire family is treated. Studies have also found that drug and alcohol treatment, which may include dual diagnosis treatment, has better outcome potential when addiction and the family dynamic is clearly understood.
Our therapists understand that the family disease can be treated and recovery for the addict and the family unit can be concrete if the family is ready to address the adjustments necessary for recovery, to develop and stabilize a new family system, and to understand that long-term sobriety and recovery is a balance between new and healthier life styles for everyone.
Arresting the Family Disease
The path through treatment for the family and the addict will present everyone with challenges. To ensure the continued health of all family members, we provide weekly phone sessions with the primary therapist. All members of the family and extended family, when appropriate, will participate in these sessions. The sessions will:
- Provide updates for family on patient’s progress
- Continue to educate the family about addiction and the impact upon the family
- Introduce new communication skills between family members
- Establish appropriate boundaries and build a healthy family system
- Reinforce the crucial reality that change must come from all members of the family not just one
Behaviors developed during the time of the patient’s substance abuse must be addressed and altered. That means that co-dependent, controlling behavior, verbal or physical abuse by any member, aggressive or threatening behavior, must now be replaced with healthier forms of interactions. Only in this way can the results of the family addiction be halted. Arresting the family disease through a structured family addiction therapy program can offer children a future free of drug and alcohol abuse or co-dependent disorders.
The Family Addiction Therapy Workshop Topics
Our free four-day family addiction therapy workshops will cover every aspect of addiction and recovery that can be thought of. Interactive sessions give addicts and family members opportunities to explore the issues surrounding addiction and recovery.
Each session has a specific topic and learning component. There are lectures, question and answers, intensive therapy groups, discussion, observation, and more.
Family addiction therapy workshops conclude with each family creating a signed contract that solidifies the addict’s and the family’s commitment to recover. A thoroughly developed aftercare plan will also be produced to ensure that both the family and the addict have a clearly delineated program to follow once the patient has left the rehabilitation facility. Following the aftercare plan is crucial for the continued growth, recovery, and healing of all family members.
