Heroin is an illegal opioid in the U.S. Opioids are prescribed for their pain-relieving properties during or after surgery or for serious injuries or illnesses such as cancer. Similar to morphine, heroin enters the brain and the spinal cord and attaches to the opioid receptors, thus blocking the transmission of pain. Another the resulting sensation is one of euphoria. There was a time, in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, when heroin was readily prescribed because of its fast-acting effect. Unfortunately, heroin is highly addictive psychologically and physiologically.
The drug can be consumed in a liquid or powder form; it can be injected, snorted, or smoked. The most common form of heroin is the white, brown, and black powders that are injected. Most heroin is “cut” with sugar, starch, or powdered milk. Street heroin can also be cut with poisons! Recent years have seen an increase in the availability of cheaper “pure” heroin, making snorting easier. People who are afraid to inject the drug are using this method, mistakenly believing it is less addictive. Heroin in all its forms is addictive, period!
The repercussions of heroin use extend far beyond the health of an individual user. Serious medical, social, and economic consequences associated with heroin use impact the immediate family and the larger community.
