PCP is a hallucinogenic drug illegally sold as a tablet, capsule, or powder. It is snorted, smoked, or ingested. When smoked, PCP is applied to everyday herbs such as mint, parsley, oregano, or illicit plants, such as marijuana. The effects last between four and six hours. However, depending upon dosage and usage effects can linger for up to twenty-four hours. Because it is a hallucinogenic, the perceptions of users are altered. It is addictive and leads to cravings and compulsive PCP-seeking behaviors.
It was originally developed in 1950s to be used as an anesthetic. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, human studies found that PCP had intense negative psychological effects. Use of PCP was prohibited in 1965.
While there is no standard medical protocol for PCP addiction, inpatient drug addiction treatment and behavior modification are considered the best approach to PCP addiction and relapse prevention.
