Spirituality in Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

A Foundation for Recovery

An overwhelming sense of isolation, doom, shame, and disconnect can characterize an alcoholic or drug addict’s sense of self in the world. When dealing with addiction, a healthy relationship with one’s surrounding environment, including family and friends falls apart.

Research has sought to understand the relationship between spirituality, healing, and recovery. From the multitude of studies there appears to be a strong correlation between a positive spiritual perspective and healthy recovery.

Confusion often arises as to the definition of a spiritual awakening and religion. Recently, a psychiatric study found that “the role of spirituality in recovery from substance use disorders relates to the promotion of individuals achieving a meaningful life.” (Galanter 57 (3) 307, Psychiatric Service, 2006)

Triggers such as stress, anxiety, and depression are tied to alcohol and drug relapse. Studies have indicated that spiritual practices, such as direct prayer or meditation, can help reduce the intensity of these triggers and facilitate a healthier response to them. The concepts of spirituality, self-definition, belonging, and much more are covered in our addiction treatment therapy groups, individual counseling, and 12-step workshops.

Using drugs and alcohol is at the other end of the spectrum from spirituality and personal empowerment. The use of drugs and alcohol tend to foster fear, anger, self-loathing, humiliation, and resentments. Spirituality, as a way of life, cultivates abstinence and generally requires faith in one’s self, others, and a power greater than one’s own self.

Lakeview Health Systems does not support or teach any one specific philosophy, but our multidisciplinary team believes that spirituality and spiritual healing have a place in recovery. To facilitate the concept of spirituality, we provide optional meditation periods, support through 12-step workshops, self-reflection, and meditation.

At Lakeview Health Systems, spirituality is a personal philosophical pursuit. The kind of exploration and depth of that exploration are completely of your own making.
