Substance Abuse
Substance abuse may lead to substance dependence or addiction. Substance abuse is detrimental to your health – both physically and mentally, and may also be detrimental to the welfare of others. Substance abuse is a disorder of continued overindulgence of an addictive substance such as alcohol or narcotic drugs and it ruins your life and the lives of your loved ones if left untreated.
The Social Consequences of Substance Abuse
With continued substance abuse of drugs or alcohol, there are often serious and life-altering negative consequences that come with it. These consequences don’t just affect you as the substance abuser; they often deeply distress others that are closest to you.
The negative consequences of substance abuse often include but are not limited to:
- Failure to meet work, school or family obligations
- Interpersonal conflicts
- Relationship conflicts
- Legal problems
- Financial problems
When substance abuse turns to substance dependency, the consequences you will face are not limited to social disturbances. Substance dependency can cause great physical harm to your health and cause emotional pain to yourself and to the important people in your life. Substance Abuse Leads to Substance Dependence
Continued substance abuse leads to substance dependence or in other words, drug and/or alcohol addiction. The disorder of addiction is a progressive disease – categorized in three stages of addiction. The first stage of addiction is characterized by a preoccupation with obtaining and using the substance while experiencing constant cravings for it. This is followed by the second stage of addiction which is the binge/intoxication phase. In this stage of substance abuse you find yourself using more of the substance than is necessary in order to experience its intoxicating effects. Eventually a tolerance to the substance is developed, as your dependency on the substance increases. You will lack motivation for normal life activities as your drug dependency grows. Once in the third stage of drug addiction - brought on by the exacerbating condition of dependency, the negative impact can make your life unmanageable. At this stage, a lack of the substance you crave may result in your experiencing withdrawal symptoms.
Additionally, substance abuse and substance dependency will cause compounding negative health consequences as the end result. If you find yourself caught up in the cycle of substance abuse you need help.
