Incorporating Equine Assisted Programming for residential treatment clients has proven to be a successful modality in addressing issues like frustration tolerance, communication skills, decision making, relationship building stress management and personal awareness. Licensed clinician and certified instructor and trainer with Richie Wingfield Horsemanship, StarrLee Heady will provide the general overview of Equine Assisted Therapy and its role in an addiction therapy program for treating clients with substance use and mental health disorders.

Objectives

AT the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define EAGALA Model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
  2. Identify the role horses play in addressing client behavior in recovery.
  3. Recognize the key outcomes that support Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in addiction treatment.

Speaker Bio::

StarrLee is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida who began her career in mental health in 1985 with the University of Arizona & U.S. Navy NADSAP program. In that program she provided substance abuse prevention and intervention services. Since that time her practice has included Addictions and full range private practice in traditional as well as Equine Assisted model programming. StarrLee Heady is also a certified riding instructor with the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) in both English and Western riding. She is a certified Instructor/Trainer with Richie Wingfield Horsemanship LLC. Her combination of horse experience, mental health & addictions training, and life experience, provide unique opportunities for facilitating personal growth and healing using equine assisted and interactive programs. She is a worldwide contract Trainer and Mentor for the EAGALA organization in addition to her work at PX Equine Enterprises Inc.
