Gender Differences in Addiction

During this lecture, Dr. Ellen Ovson will explore the gender differences unique to women who struggle with addiction. Looking at the epidemiological comparison of substances of abuse in men and women we’ll discuss the medical consequences of addiction in women and the effects of substances on pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr. Ovson will also address the differences in co-occurring disorders, diagnosis and intervention in women, and the benefits for gender-responsive therapy.
About the Speaker:
Ellen A. Ovson, M.D., F.A.S.A.M.
Dr. Ovson is a Staff Physician at Lakeview Health where she performs assessments, formulates treatment plans, and functions as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Her primary focus is addiction in women.
Dr. Ovson received her B.S. in chemistry from Emory University and her M.D. from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
After practicing Internal Medicine for 21 years, she became interested in Addiction Medicine and served a one-year fellowship at Bradford Health Services in Warrior, Alabama. She has since served as a Staff Physician at Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in Hattiesburg, MS, as well as Medical Director of the Renaissance eating disorders program and Gentle Path sexual addiction program at Pine Grove. From 2009 until June 2017, she was Medical Director at Bradford Health Services in Madison, Alabama. She has been board-certified and -recertified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
