Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Substance Abuse

The Partial Hospitalization Program at Lakeview Health is the level of care between our Residential Treatment and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs. Our Partial Hospitalization Program serves patients with alcohol and substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health disorders, and a history of trauma or post-traumatic stress. All PHP patients have completed Lakeview’s Inpatient Rehab and Residential Treatment programs.

Structured Transition to Practice Sobriety

For many of our patients, the move from residential treatment to partial hospitalization marks the halfway-point of their time at Lakeview Health. This is a critical moment in the recovery journey. You’ll most likely have about a month of sobriety under your belt, though this will vary with the individual. Your body is completely clear of alcohol and drugs, and your mind is getting used to the idea that recovery is a lifelong process. If you’ve uncovered any co-occurring mental health disorders during detox, inpatient rehab, or residential treatment, you’ve taken steps toward understanding how they relate to your alcohol/substance use disorder and the role they play in your continued sobriety.

You’re ready to start practicing your new coping skills and healthy, substance-free lifestyle habits in unstructured settings – but you’re probably not ready to go it completely alone. Our Partial Hospitalization Program gives you the perfect balance between round the clock supervision and personal responsibility. We add step-wise, structured, off-site experiences to your treatment routine to shift the ball slowly and carefully to your side of the court. Though your sobriety is – and has been since the beginning – dependent upon you and your level of commitment to the process, we’re committed to guiding you from detox to discharge in such a way as to give you the best possible chance of long-term, sustained success.

Daily Life in the Partial Hospitalization Program

At the Partial Hospitalization level of care, you live off-campus in shared, gender-specific apartments at Lakeview’s The Villages. You participate in the same recovery groups, wellness activities, and social support meetings you did during Inpatient Rehab and Residential Treatment, with one big difference: independent living and off-site activities mean you take the first step toward life after rehab.

The day begins at 7:30 am and concludes at 6:30 pm. We provide shuttles to and from our campus, where you receive at least six hours of structured therapy per day. You eat three meals per day in our gender-specific dining rooms, with healthy snacks available between meals.

Your treatment plan closely resembles the one you followed during Inpatient Rehab and Residential Treatment. You continue with one-on-one therapy, daily 12-step meetings, medical/psychiatric care as needed, and family sessions. Here’s what changes:

  • You live off-campus
  • You administer your own medications
  • On weekday evenings, you can participate in off-site 12-step meetings (except for Wednesday evening super-clean up at The Villages)
  • On Saturdays, you can:
    • Participate in off-site team building exercises
    • Attend off-site 12-step meetings
    • Receive on-site family visits
  • On Sundays, you can:
    • Participate in off-site spirituality activities
    • Attend off-site 12-step meetings
    • Receive on-site family visits

Refine Real-World Recovery Skills with Full Clinical Support

This step in the recovery process allows you to go out into the world and apply the sobriety strategies you’ve discussed in group, one-on-one therapy, and on-site meetings while giving you a safe, structured place to land, debrief, and discuss your experiences after the fact. You get a full day of clinical care, but spend evenings off-site in a healthy setting with recovery peers. You attend off-site 12-step meetings and interact with people you’ve never met. You get new perspectives, hear new voices, and form a picture of yourself – your sober self – living a clean and sober lifestyle. You gain experiential knowledge and start to answer the million-dollar question: is all this going to work when I leave Lakeview Health?
