Use of new synthetic drugs has emerged as a phenomenon of the internet age. These substances, new designer drugs produced in clandestine laboratories, are labeled as household products in some cases and deceptively marketed as “legal highs” over the internet where they are promoted and sold. The sale and use of these substances, first identified in the mid-2000s in Western Europe has rapidly spread globally, now as illicit drugs, since they have been banned in most jurisdictions. The most prominent of these substances are the synthetic cathinones, cannabinoids, and opiates. These substances are characterized by laboratory analysis and considerable information is now available about the epidemiology, pharmacology, and common morbidities associated with their use. Given the rapid expansion of use of these substances a review of what is known about them has importance for educators, clinicians, and policy makers.
- Describe the origins, prevalence, and mechanism of action of synthetic drugs of abuse.
- Compare and contrast the synthetic drugs with their natural counterparts.
- Discuss the current trends in legislation, the role of internet communications in the emergence and distribution of drugs of abuse.
