The drugs abused by our society are constantly changing. The opioid epidemic is in full bloom. A cheaper alternative that circumvents drug testing and the legal system often spell big profits. Science is giving us answers about the potential harms of marijuana. Those in active addiction have found ways to abuse drugs that treat addictions. This presentation focuses on the latest drug trends in substance abuse.
Participants will walk away with:
- Understanding why we take drugs.
- Knowledge of the latest information on the harmful effects of THC.
- Comprehension of the drugs used to treat addictions and how they can be abused.
- Ability to compare the different medications used in addiction treatment.

About the Speaker:
Rick Rayl, R.Ph.
Director of Pharmacy, University Behavioral Health of Denton
Rick Rayl is the former Director of Pharmacy Affairs for the Florida Physician’s Recovery Network and has collaborated with pharmacy recovery networks in Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. As a SMART Recovery facilitator, Rick leads group at Grace Counseling Center in Lewisville, Texas. He is co-owner of Watchdog Solutions, a drug testing company. His experience with drug testing helps him to stay current with the rapidly expanding issues surrounding synthetic drugs such as K2. His position as director of pharmacy at a 104 bed acute care psychiatric facility that treats chemical dependency and the severely mentally ill, gives him ample opportunity to stay current with the drugs that treat addiction as well as all psychotropic drugs in general. Rick has published an article in DATIA’s Focus magazine (Winter 2016 addition) on synthetic drugs titled, “Synthetics-Faux Drugs with Real Consequences.”
