Dino Liverano:

Welcome to the Lakeview Health Video Podcast Series. I’m Dino Liverano, the Clinical Manager here at Lakeview Health. I’m here with Dr. Polles today. Dr. Polles is a Board Bertified Psychiatrist for more than 30 years. Has worked with professionals with addictive and psychiatric disorders. Thanks for joining us Dr. Polles.

Dr. A. Polles:

Thank you.

Dino Liverano:

Let’s talk at little bit about some of the things that you feel may contribute to professionals’ struggling with substance abuse. What do you see as some of the main factors with professionals’ developing substance abuse disorder?

Dr. A. Polles:

Some of the factors that produce their ability to do their jobs are the same factors that make the vulnerable to developing substance abuse disorders. Of course, there’s many times a genetic component, but not always. A drive for perfectionism and an inability to see oneself as needing help also contribute to that. The high rates of burn out now that medical professionals also make them vulnerable to seeking relief from that state of mind and state of being, but then they lead to further issues.

Dino Liverano:

Yeah, and I think that we see that burnout every day in people all the time, and how do you deal with that is such an important factor?

Dr. A. Polles:

Absolutely.

Dino Liverano:

For someone who is struggling, can you talk a little bit about the importance of seeking treatment and what that process might look like for a professional?

Dr. A. Polles:

Sure. The general process is the same as for anyone, and that is the first step is to ask for help. Now, where to turn to ask for help, healthcare professionals tend to have unique characteristics and unique work experiences that really lend themselves to needing more specialized care and facilities and with people who are used to dealing with the population and with the issues that they deal with in their day to day lives. So, their local county medical societies, local wellness committee, if they’re a member of their state national organizations, such as the FOMA here in Florida, or the FMA here in Florida. Those are good resources.

So, all of those can be very beneficial. And I guess they could just Google ‘health care professional treatment’ and they may be able to turn up with things. This facility actually is one of our preferred providers. Not preferred providers, that’s the wrong language. But, one of our approved facilities, so I know you all do a lot of outreach and also have a Help Line.

Dino Liverano:

And just letting people know that they have a sense of safety when they turn to the local boards that that’s a safe place for them to talk about things that are going on and find the right help.

Dr. A. Polles:

Yes, you know, they don’t have to call their boards, so from our perspective, if they don’t have board involvement, it’s probably better for them to call directly for help, or they certainly can call us, the Florida Professionals Resource Network, and we’ll help connect them or give them information for how to get help.

Dino Liverano:
